  Ce travail de didactisation d'un conte de Noël a été élaboré par un groupe de professeurs d'anglais à destination de classes de troisième de collège, de classes de BEP ou de secondes lors d'une séance de l'antenne d'anglais.

Le conte a été divisé en 4 parties :
- partie n° 1 : pages 1 et 2 jusqu'à "Sally said as she started up the moonbeam."
- partie n° 2 : pages 2 à 4 jusqu'à "There, stuck in the moon dust, was Santa's sleigh".
- partie n° 3 : pages 3 à 4 jusqu'à "They flew over a town in Kansas and landed on a roof with a THUMP!"
- partie n° 4 : pages 4 & 5

I- INTRODUCTION DU THEME ET DU LEXIQUE.

1. A l'aide d'un transparent réalisé à partir de l'illustration donnée en annexe
· présenter le thème
· revoir ou introduire les termes utiles à la compréhension ultérieure du conte : sleigh, moon, reindeer, roof , chimney, soot, presents, suit...

2. A l'aide de l'image d'ouverture du conte introduire ou rebrasser les mots : stocking, hang, nail et fire Cette image peut aussi être mise sur transparent.

II- ETUDE DE LA PREMIERE PARTIE (Pages 1 et 2 jusqu'à "Sally said as she started up the moonbeam.")

1. Lire la page 1

          tâche à la lecture : repérer WHO, WHERE, WHEN

2. Relire la page 1

2.1 Circle the right translation.
          (exercice lexical : choisir la traduction qui convient en fonction du contexte et des images)
          a) crawled : elle bondit / elle rentra / elle se glissa
          b) sparrow : moineau / renard / aigle
          c) nest : lit / nid / niche
          d) windowsill : rebord de fenêtre / branche / toit
          e) horn : étoile / neige / cor ou corne
          f) cozy : gigantesque / inconfortable / douillet

2.2 Pick out the name of the character she wants to see.
          Avec une classe de 2^nde ou de 3^ème on pourra rebrasser l'intention, le désir.

3. Lire la fin de la première partie

          Find and list the actions Sally does. (indiquer par six petits traits le nombre d'actions à trouver)
          or
          Put the following drawings describing Sally's actions in the right order. Then, write the sentences corresponding to each of them under the drawings.

III- ETUDE DE LA DEUXIEME PARTIE (Pages 2 et 3 jusqu'à "There, stuck in the moon dust, was Santa's sleigh").

1. Where did Sally arrive ?

2. Who opened the door ?

3. This person had a problem. Find the words in the text that prove it. (ou How did this person feel ? Justify by quoting the text)

4. How did they travel ? (au besoin proposer un choix multiple : by plane on a flying carpet on a spring)

What was the problem / the matter / the trouble with Santa Claus ?

   -> à émission d'hypothèses (selon le niveau on utilisera soit had + en soit might + have + en)

IV- ETUDE DE LA TROISIEME PARTIE (Pages 3 à 4 jusqu'à "They flew over a town in Kansas and landed on a roof with a THUMP!")

   -> vérification des hypothèses émises précédemment : Santa Claus had crashed into a satellite which was now stuck on his head !

   -> Underline the problem and the consequences.

A cette occasion on rebrassera la cause et la conséquence, on apportera éventuellement des aides lexicales.
Exemples. : As father Xmas did remember who he was, he didn't want (refused / was unwilling) to take presents to all the children in the world
  Father Xmas didn't remember he had to take presents to all the children as a result Sally took the reins from Santa's hands / decided to deliver the presents herself / made up her mind to do it herself..

V- ETUDE DE LA QUATRIEME PARTIE (Pages 4 & 5)

1. Pick out Sally's orders to Santa Claus. (rebrasser l'expression de l'obligation)

2. What about Santa's reaction ?

He is happy to go down the chimney he is indifferent to Sally's orders He refuses to go down the chimney

  Why ? Because...

3. Circle the three verbs describing Sally's reaction.

4. In the text, find the sentence corresponding to the idea expressed by the following the pictures :

5. In the text, underline the words corresponding to Santa's reaction.

6. Choose the proverb best summing up the end of the story in your opinion and justify your choice by quoting the text :

       All's well that ends well.
       Never say never.
       Where there's a will, there's a way.
       Every cloud has a silver lining.
       It never rains but it pours.
